Tags and Indexing

Following on from the recent problems over the 5 word limit on tags Munzly has come up with this suggestion.

"What you should really be doing is asking for another field in the database called "index" or "description" which would be better suited to your purpose and save you having to misuse the tags field."

This way we can simply add an "index" widget instead (or as well as) the "tags" widget

Would this be feasible? If so could you please consider implementation?

Thank you

I also think an 'Index' would be a good idea, if possible.

It sounds good to me. Cant see any reason why it shouldn't be possible.

It should work just like tags but not mess up the tagging system

But you're already using tags - it'll work the same-ish

I think it would solve the problem

You don't need to - it's already there in the "design" part - you just drag it to wherever you want.

oh, thanks...I think...LOL...I'd do it and see what happens...GBHs...XXX

ps - I've just looked at your blog - you're already using it!!!!

Told you I'm really ignorant about tags...did notice when I checked and have added one more listing current ones...:) I think I'm having a senile moment as far as they are concerned...blame BCUK for springing this sudden deletion upon us and sending me into a total meltdown brainwise...HLOL...GBHs...XXX

I'm not sure what you mean.

Sounds like this suggested 'index' is just a different word for the same thing. Or have I completely misunderstood you?

It is almost the same but would mean we wouldn't misuse your tagging system in innovative ways. Hopefully it would allow us a few extra words (within reason obviously). The "index" wouldn't get tied up with external searches which I think is the problem BCUK had with tags.

Do you get my drift now?

I think so, but I really can't imagine that it would make sense to have what would effectively be a secondary tagging system.

I will make some 'tag guidelines' over the coming days, and hopefully that will simplify things a lot.

That still leaves the "Five Word Rule" which is the main problem for many of us who try to use the tags responsibly. Most are happy with the size restrictions in terms of number of characters but when the words "a" "an" "the" etc make up the word count it gets unwielding.

My deleted tags are mainly ones with six words and the most I've heard people wanting is seven.

Thanks for all your efforts.
